As much as I found Melancholia to be very indulgent and absolutely ridiculous, the imagery from the opening sequence has made an indelible impression. Though I’d be curious to check out Bill Viola again, the idea that depression feels like being weighed down by large, heavy strands of gray, murky rope as you try to walk forward—well, it intrigues and appeals.
